PROJECT PROPOSAL - TEMPORARY PAGE

Woman, Scaffolding
Solo Show by Ana Maria Micu
Mind Set Art Center

March 2 - April 11, 2024
The core concept of the exhibition comes from a lingering memory that I have, from having watched, many years ago, the movie “The Agony and the Ecstasy” (1965), particularly the scene in which Michelangelo struggles to paint, laid on his back, climbed on top of a wood scaffolding, and paints pour into his eyes.

I am associating this memory of mine with an observation that occurred to me now, regarding the ceilings of my studio rooms as being almost the only space that I have at my disposal to which I did not yet assign any utilitarian exploitation.

I want to include in the exhibition visual proofs captured in my apartment, during attempts to stack pieces of furniture, so I can sit comfortably on top and draw on the ceiling.

Metaphorically the show would be about a female character rising to reach a higher place from the murky, earthy, and vegetal depths of her bed.

WALL DRAWINGS

The 2 areas of wall drawing will be executed prior to the opening. The calendar will be decided, but the execution of the drawings will not take more than 2 weeks, with a day off between them.

The wall drawings are made with washes made out of pigments, water, and gum Arabic. Upon this layer, I might intervene with colored lines drawn with soft pastel sticks. The exact visual representation, composition, and color gamma of these drawings can not be simulated in advance. The images I used in the 3D simulation should be taken only as a generic reference.
FINALIZED WORKS
SKETCHES FOR CHARCOAL DRAWING ON CANVAS
SKETCHES FOR ACRYLIC PAINTINGS
ANIMATION - planned 15 working days

I will provide the animation as a 4K video file. Ideally, it should be projected from a 4K 3840x2180 video projector. If such a model can not be made available by the gallery, a HD 1920x1080 projector would suffice.

The second requirement is the building of a new gallery wall, size in the 3D simulation as 2.86m wide and 5.45m tall, to create a dark room. The walls inside this room, around the projected image, should be painted black. I can do this, during the show's installation.

The animation subject matter would be based on video footage collected during the production of works within the exhibition, depicting myself climbing and descending a scaffold improvised from pieces of furniture, which ensures my comfort while painting and drawing at a high wall level.
